winter break time wisely

1. Wake up early. nothing eats away winter break the moping around beneath in the covers. decide the prevouis day when you will get out of bed, then make sure follow through.
during the few days of vacation, chances are that you will relish the opportunity to sleep in. it's okay to do this and give yourself a break, because your body will naturally put itself on a schedule to wake itseld up earlier.
2. Maintain good health and hygiene. brush your teeth and bathe often. make sure to use sunblock even in the cold , and remeber that the only healthy tan is a spray-on! winter is a great time to get in shape, or stay in shape. Consider joining a sport, or at the very least get outside and have fun everyday.
3.Study. particularly if you are a high school student, studying remains essential even though the school year is in short recess. look over last years notes or do some reasearch into what next years courses have in store. when school resumes you will be glad  that your academic knowledge and skills have not detoriated you will be ready and not panicking that you don't know something. most of you already know if you have homework reading or toher research stay on top of it. you will be grateful when you return to school. keep your brain active. read for school or pleasure, research your own interests or even just a crossword puzzle.
4. Follow a routine. however loose the structure will both motivate you and keep hours spent doing nothing to a minimum. don't play to many video games and even if it might be cold go out for a few hours every week.
5. Join a volunteer group of some sort. all communities have some sort of soup kitchen, or place where someone might need your help or you can start working  on finding leads for the community service you will have to do in the future to graduate. you can help out in church, or other place in the city. you will stay in contact with friends, have a great sense of accomplishment, stay active and even help others.
6. Start a summer job. this may differ depending on your age. however, make sure that it's age-appropriate and that you will follow through. some ideas might be working at a swapmeet, babysitting, lawn care or getting a lead in future job.
7. Go to a camp or learn something new
8. stay active in your society.
9.Read at least one book.

Advisory questions on U.S.

1. What direction do you see the U.S. going? Why is is going this direction?

I see the U.S. going neither a good outcome or bad outcome because there is always going to be good days and nor bad days that have to deal with the government or the people.

2. Why do SAT scores in the U.S. continue to go downward?

I think this occurs because people are starting not to care about their education so they ar ebeing lazy and not trying hard to pass tests that they don't really care about other stuff.

3. What are solutions to low SAT scores?

I think that people should take their education serouisly because that is what will take them far in life.

4. Make a bullet list of a few problems with education in CA.

  • Students are lazy
  • Teachers making the class boring
  • Need to make education fun in a way
  • Classes being to long that students die of boredom
5. What are solutions to the CA education problems?

I personally think think should make more effort in making school fun something students want to wake up in every morning and be glad about coming to school. Not to make it fun to where it goes out of control but making leatrning interesting.

6. "To educate a man in mind but not in morals is to educate a menace to society." (Theodore Roosevelt)
write a reflection on this quote

Reflection: this quote basically means if you are going to teach someone teach them everything they have to learn and know just not the basics so they could truly know what they learned is always going to be remember by them.

S.S.S. Advisory

Student Success Statement

"It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference."-Paul "Bear' Bryant

Reflection: This baiscally states that just by one saying they will accomplish this means it will happen. But by them sticking to it and showing that they really want to get to where they want makes them get there.

ADVISORY

HPIAM Data

-FACT: 34% of HPIAM students have a below a 2.0 GPA
-Why is this a worrying statistic?
      -Will not graduate
      - Parents unhappy
      - Students get held back
      - School is going to seem as if they give poorly education

Writing Prompt

-What are some specific reasons you think this is happening? How can we solve this problem(concrete ideas)?

I think this is happening because most students are lazy. It's not that they're stupid its just that they don't want too do the work because its lack of effort. Well really there is a lot of thing like tutoring is already offered maybe staying a little more in school to study and ask for help from the teachers. Maybe change the schedule a little more of less time in each class because after a while being in the class for a long time is tiring especially if it's one of those teachers that don't make the subject interesting but instead it's boring.

Next Tuesday
-Study Hall: Bring work to study or complete
-Agenda Check

Paul "Bear" Bryant

"Bear" Bryant (1913–1983)

Born in Moro Bottom, Arkansas, on September 11, 1913, Bryant was the eighth surviving child (three died at birth) of a total of nine. He had four brothers and four sisters and was the youngest boy, with one sister born four years after him. Their home was a three-square-mile area called Moro Bottom (sometimes referred to as Moro Bottoms), an unincorporated place where seven families lived.Bear Bryant played football at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. After serving in World War II, he became head coach at the University of Maryland and Texas A&M University. He is one of America's top best football coaches that at the time he reached his death he had won more games than any other coach.Under Bryant, the Alabama Crimson Tide won national titles in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1978, and 1979.  Bryant won this last championship with a perfect season, including his defeat of Lou Holtz’s Arkansas Razorbacks in the Sugar Bowl. He announced his retirement in 1982, with the Crimson Tide winning his last bowl game, the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, on December 29.

Less than one month after winning the 1982 Liberty Bowl, sixty-nine-year-old Paul Bryant died of a heart attack. Following a funeral, which ran for three miles, he was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama. A month after his death, he was suprisingly awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, by Ronald Reagan. At the time of his death, he was the all-time most successful coach in American college football history.

advisory: working notebook

the working notebook is the daily notebook tooken to class. it holds all the papers and information needed each day. any three-ring binder can serve as a working notebook; the nylon zippered type tends to last longer. your working notbook should contain:
-A portable three-hole punch
-A zippered pouch with three holes to hold highlighters, pencils, pens, clips, "sticky notes", and other small supplies
-A monthly calendar
-A ruler
-Section dividers for each subject labeled HW. notes, handouts, and quizzes/tests
-An assignment book
These items are available at most office supply stores in a three-hole punched format so they can be easily inserted into the notebook. This is important, because if the items are not attached to the notebook, they will get lost in backpacks or left at home or school.
One working notebook for all of your child's classes might be too large for some students, especially if they are in high school. Two medium-size notebooks with thwo or three subjects in each is an alternative to one large notebook. Morning classes might be placed in one, and afternoon classes might be placed in another.
Whichever alternative noted above that you choose, the important thing is that on a daily basis, you should date, three-hole punch, and a file any of this school papers under the appropriate divider for each subject. You should also note assignments in detail in his assignment book.

Hpiam Advisory project
Next tuesday, novemeber 5, bring all your work from all classes in order to show the organization requiered from each class. You will have time in advisory to hole-punch and organize your binders, folders, notebooks, etc. so you nedd to some prepared.

Prompt 4

Thanks to the internet, people have more access to more info than any time in history. People can instantly find info on almost any topic in the time it takes to type a couple of words and a click of a mouse. But we often know so little about the source of this info, including its reliability and the qualifications of the person who wrote it. If we don't know its source, information is not much good to us.

Assignment:

1. Do people need to know the source of any information before they use it?

--I think people should know because it will help them just in case if they want to go back to that page/website. Also to find if the website or source is from a safe website or a virus.

2. Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support the postition with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

--For i usually always use the internet to help me out on the projects or essays or writtings. But know that i think about it i usually never check the sources sometimes i do but not very often. Most of the time i just look for an asnwer or idea but never mind to look at the source unless the teacher tells me i need to include where i got the information from.
Now i do consider to look at the source bause i never know if what they state in the page is true or not. Or even if the source is safe because you never know what the persond behind the source is thinking or doing. People should be able to check the website with out them feeling that was is in the page is false or information is stolen from another source little things like these are very important.

Advisory

Many colleges now offer courses in which students study television programs, comic books, magazines, advertizing, and other aspects of popular culture. Critics complain that schools shouldn't replace serious literature and history courses with such fluff. They claim that courses in popular culture present material that is trivial and inconsequential. But the study of popular culture can be jus as important, demanding, and instructive as the study of traditional subjects.

Assignment:
Can the study of popular culture be as valuable as the study of tradiontional literary and historical subjects?

Well for me its neither a yes or no. It's more of a they could include both because there is nothing wrong with the new culture from the old.

Wrtite about it expressiong your point of view on this issue.

The study of popular culture can be as valuable as the study of traditional literary and historical subjects because the study of popular culture can prepare students for a successful social life and a successful career.Well like i stated above im not against it or forward it. I think they should teach both but an equal amount of both so one material won't be left out. Because if you leave out one the others will be complaining about it so i think both used is enough.
Because now a days i think students would also much prefer the new popular culture because we basiclly know all about it. We live in a world where everything is about technology now so in a way it would be better to have it this way. the study of popular culture can be as valuable as the study of traditional literary and historical subjects because the study of popular culture can prepare students adulthood. Technological advancements have influenced many career tracks, and students must receive the good training to stand out in their careers.. Popular culture not only educates us on values that will be useful, but it reveals this to us in many different forms that we enjoy. It has been proven that when you learn about something you enjoy, you are apt to pay more attention. Culture is no exception, since it teaches us through TV, music, and the most important, most often used, the internet.

advisory

Is it possible for a society to be fair to everyone? Plan and write an essay in a new post of your portfolio in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

It is possible for a society to be fair because everyone can change but depends if they want to change. like i said it's up to people to change because not everyone will accept the fact that society will change.

The day will come off course of people but some people say this"Life isn't fair. We have been taught that since we were born." And this in a way is true because depending how we've been raised will determine our agreements when we are older because that is what we have been taught and how we will teach others.

I think society could be fair because everyone is good at something. People would make it unfair though because they are the reason society is unfair. Everyone has a talent and it would be hard if no one could show off their talents or inspire others. You should be able to express any thing you want to in any way, with no restrictions. Life is not fair today in many aspects but we can still have the pursuit of knowledge, athletics or any thing else we want to. No one should ever be discriminated in this society yet there are so many people that do it even if its because you have no knowledge or aren't good at something as others. People make you less just because you don't have certain qualities that they have.

Honesty
9 of 10

Honesty is always the best policy. Employers need to know that they can trust you with everything from company credit cards to trade secrets. How can you work at honesty? You demonstrate integrity every day that you do your own homework and resist the temptation to cheat on exams.

What is honesty?

·       Honesty is telling the truth.
·       Honesty is straightforward conduct.
·       Honesty is being sincere, truthful, trustworthy, honorable, fair, genuine, and loyal with integrity.

You are being honest when you…

·       Do your own homework
·       Tell a friend the truth
·       Explain the real reason you didn’t do your homework
·       Keep your eyes on your own paper
·       Clean up your room after making a promise
·       Give the cashier the extra money she gave you by mistake
·       Write a report in your own words instead of copying
·       Admit you made the mistake
·       Keep a friend’s secret
·       Turn in a wallet full of money that you found

Student Success Statement

“Honesty is the cornerstone of character. The honest man or women seeks not merely to avoid criminal or illegal acts, but to be scrupulously fair, upright, fearless in both action and expression. Honesty pays dividends both in dollars and in peace of mind.”-B.C. Forbes

Reflection: I think this quote means you hone to be honest to people so that you can have their trust in you and you won’t need to work hard because you have their trust with honesty. Also that when one has honesty that’s all you need for you to be reliable because if you are like this people will admire you because of your action. If you weren’t people wouldn’t want you around because you probably wouldn’t be loyal.

Year End Reflection

A. What i accomplished this year is a passing grade at least for this class and also new friends.

B. I am proud of passing my algebra class with a good passing grade.

C. Well I discovered that i have a new interest in helping others and wanting my education for a better future.

D. A problem that i had was trying to pass all my classes but most of them i am passing them with a good grade but there's just one class i have to do the credits for.

E. Well a lesson to me I guess was putting all my effort into education because this well help me all along my life to be someone better. Because everyone is the future of America it's just that some make it and others fall. But i want to make it because I want to be something in life. Where i will be proud of myself for all i have done.

8 OF 10 & S.S.S.

Time Management
8 of 10
Master the moments and you may be a real pro when it comes to juggling the many demands on your time—classes, homework and activities—with some family help. College gives you an even bigger chance to sharpen your time management skills by doing it all on your own. And that’s a good thing since most jobs require multitasking. You might need to take care of current clients while attracting new ones, respond to e-mails while working on a major presentation, or order tomorrow’s produce while planning next week’s menu.

Someone said, “Wherever you are, be there.” Focus on the present moment and give it all your attention. Don’t let your mind drift and wander here and there when you need to be thinking and concentrating on the moment at hand. You can’t go back and recapture this moment, so make the most of it while it NOW. Master the present and you will master the future. Work smart by mastering the present moment.
Choose the Right!!!

Student Success Statement

“Stop worrying about whether you’re going to win or lose and focus your full attention on what’s happening right this moment.”-Phil Jackson

Reflection: This to me means that for one to stop worrying about the future and focus on today because what you do today will affect your future. Whether it be bad or good but you decide how today will be for tomorrow. For example if I have a test tomorrow and I’m frightened about my results if I stop doing this I will have time to study, and study to get enough information on what the test will be. And depending on how good I study will determine my scores.

Attention to Detail
7 of 10

When you double-check your calculations for a math problem or cite sources carefully in a research paper, you’re paying close attention to detail. That skill comes in handy in any workplace, whether you maintain a database, keep a log of the hours you spend with clients or write e-mails.
John Wooden, UCLA’s former great basketball coach who led his teams to ten consecutive national championships, was asked what he attributed his success to. Among a number of things, he mentioned that paying attention to details was one of the most important qualities for successful coaching and for high achievement in any worthwhile pursuit. He even paid attention to his players would lace up and tie their shoe strings. If they didn't tie them correctly, he would teach them how.
Details may be small things, but from smalls things come great things; therefore, pay attention to details and you will experience substantial progress in your overall educational attainment.

“Everyone is the architect of their own learning.”-Clauduis

Cool Under Pressure
6 of 10

Very few students enjoy taking tests. Yet functioning well under pressure is crucial to your future success. Try thinking of the pressure of testing as practice for the work world’s own explosive situations. You could someday find yourself meeting tight deadlines, speaking with irate customers, wielding a scalpel or handling dangerous chemicals.

The best way to curtail pressure and to even eliminate it is to prepare. Applying the motto “Be Prepared” holds true first time and every time. Prepare for that test, and you won’t worry about it. In fact, it will be your chance to shine, to reveal the hard work you have put into preparing for the test. You will be rewarded for the effort you have thrust into your studies. Preparation removes fear. When you are prepared, you will not fear. Preparation helps you maintain your cool under pressure. Preparation generates energy and enthusiasm; therefore, prepare and your coolness under pressure is sure to abound.

“Start with what is right rather than what is acceptable.”-Peter F. Drucker

Reflection: This to me means that all this is about Action of one doing things that are good and will benefit you forever. Initiative
5 of 10

Initiative is integrity, inventiveness, originality, ingenuity, imagination. Every time you respond in class, every time you choose your own research topic, every time you put together your own interpretation of a piece of literature, you take initiative. And future employers value can-do professionals who come up with new ideas and a chart of their own course projects, employees who are self-reliant. Self-reliant people are self-starters who don’t procrastinate on getting the job done. They know what is required to do and do it. They don’t wait to be told many times. Succeeding in high school, college, and in the career world is taking the initiative.

Student Success Statement

“To be great- - concentrate.”-Orson Swett Marden

Reflection: this is explained simple in order for someone to do something right you have to concentrate of course. Why because the more you forget about your surroundings and ignore other people the better you will do your work. For example: on a test a classmate is calling you to ask you for an answer and make you get off topic and distracts you. You will not do so goes in the essay or test because you may off forgot what you did or read and not do good, when you could have avoided reading the story all over again since the beginning.

Problem-Solving Skills
4 of 10

Problem solving goes far beyond your math textbook. Every assignment is an opportunity to weigh all possible solutions carefully and choose the one you think is best. As a working professional, you’ll be solving problems regularly, whether it’s fixing a bug in a computer program or overcoming budget shortfalls. Problem is solving situations occur extensively and frequently; therefore, be ready when then come.

When problems or challenges occur, some people look at them at negative experiences, as a crisis. These people are the ones who live day by day with gloom and negativism in their attitudes. But the really successful people, those who are cheerful and optimistic, are those who look at problems as opportunities, opportunities to learn, grow, expand their horizons, and make new discoveries. They look on the bright side of things and live happy lives.

“Education is a marathon—not a sprint”- Anon

Reflection: This to me means that with education we need to take our time. Also take it seriously because it is not a game but something we have and make good use of the rest of our lives. Because to get far in life we need education because you will be a nobody. For example you are looking for a job but you never graduated H.S. and didn’t go into college, well I think the boss would prefer someone who has their H.S. Diploma than somebody that decided to slack off and drop out of school because they will probably do the same at work. So that’s why take education seriously and don’t slack off because it will help you get far. CTR!

Teamwork Skills

Every time your class breaks into groups to tackle a challenge, you build teamwork skills. In college, you’ll continue to have these opportunities to practice voicing your opinions, listening and responding to others, and reaching compromises. By the time you leave college, you can be an expert in this important workplace skill.

Together

Everyone

Achieves

More

Individually you can achieve so much, but when you work with others for a common cause, the same objectives, you can accomplish a tremendous amount more. You synergize your talents, knowledge, and skills with those whom you work. All members of the team are edified together, a type of edification you can’t obtain by working alone.

“The man who has no imagination has no wings.”-Muhammad Ali

Reflection: This to me means that in other words one needs belief. Why because when you do you will go far because you will try to do everything possible to get there and/or stay there. Also you don’t think of what you can do then it won’t come true without the imagination you need. If you don’t try you won’t get anywhere so you have to think of what could happen to you if you do try.

Speaking Skills

2 of 10

When you’re assigned a class presentation, think twice before dismissing it as an unimportant part of your education. Employers look for speaking skills in job applicants, who may have to give presentations to clients or represent their organization in the field. It’s never too soon to practice good eye contact and other public speaking techniques.

According to The Book of Lists, the fear of public speaking ranks number one in the minds of the majority of people. Far above the fear of death and disease, comes the fear of standing in front of a crowd. Joel Weiner noted author and public speaker wants to help people overcome that fear.

“The biggest fear is public speaking, with 15 percent of American experiencing a dramatic fear of it,” said Dr. Michael Telch of the laboratory for the study of anxiety disorders (LSAD) in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. ”People have had to turn down jobs, and certainly students have dropped classes because of it.”

Regardless of your occupation, your success depends on a great deal upon your ability to communicate effectively! Whether you’re running a meeting, selling a product, making a presentation, motivating co-workers or just communication one-on-one with others, you’ll get far better results if you can speak persuasively, smoothly and intelligently.

Reflection:This to me means as if that persistence is all we need to live our life's. Because persistence means continuance of something that goes on, on & on. And for example the human race continues. This is deep because in reality yes we all need to be persistent at some point, everybody needs this to be honest.

Writing skills

Communication is at the top of the list of skills that employers look for. And communication in the workplace often means writing.

Health professionals keep patient charts, researchers depend on the money they collect by writing grant applications, software engineers write technical specifications, and nearly everyone writes e-mail to people inside and outside their organization. And before you even get the chance to interview for a job, you’ll need to present yourself in cover letters and resumes.

So, by taking writing serious and doing your best on every research paper, every lab report you write in your blog site, and every writing activity you engage in, you’re preparing yourself for a good career.

“To see what is right and not to do it is want for courage.”-Confucius

Reflection:  To me this is a brief explanation of the quote It means that if you are in a situation where you know what the right thing to do is, and you don't do it anyway, then you are cowardly or weak of morale and lack courage. Understand what is the right thing to do, disregarding the consequences of doing what is right.

Part 3

Identify key words.

This helps you focus on the main idea of challenging questions.

Rephrase difficult questions.

To understand questions better; rewrite them in your own words. Be careful not to change the meaning.

Organize your thoughts before you write.

Take time to organize your responses to short-answer and essay questions. You’ll reduce the time you need to revise.

Write neatly.

Be sure you don’t lose points on answers the teachers can’t read.

Use all the time you’re given.
If you finish early, don’t leave. Use the extra time to proofread and review your answers.

“Persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement.”-Matt Biondi

Reflection: This means basically when you put all your effort, mind, and belief into something you will get it. For example: let’s say in a competition and I lose by 1 point. It doesn't actually mean that I lost and I’m not good at it, just that I know I put all my effort into it that even though I lost in reality I won because I was very close to get there I just needed a little more persistent.

Part 2
During the test
Read the directions.

It’s important that you follow the instructions exactly. For example, some questions may have more than one correct answer.

Answer easy questions first.

Doing this can jog your memory about useful facts. You may also come across information that can help you with other questions.

Answer every question.

Unless there is a penalty for wrong answers, try to answer every question; you begin but don’t complete correctly.

Ask questions.

If a question isn't clear, talk to your teacher. If that’s not possible, explain your answer in the margin.

“Improve your performance by improving your attitude.”-ANON

Reflection: This to me means that by one having a good attitude, appearance, feeling, etc. That will help on what they are doing to be better than before. Because to try to make something perfect one has to make sure you are feeling this way and everything you will do; has to benefit you.
