assertiveness

Assertiveness

Def:
having or showing a confident and forceful personality.

Quote:
Assertiveness is your ability to act in harmony with your self-esteem without hurting others.    - Author unknown

Reflection:
This quote means that to one be positive and confident of the abilities and new experiences that one can face. Yet, be able to always keep one-self positive without putting others down or making them feel less of. For example: Knowing that you and a friend applied for a job and one getting ready being prepared and confident that you will get the job and lets say you do but do not depress your friend if they don't receive the offer and rubbing it in their faces. Just remember you are capable of so many things just trust yourself.

8 OF 10 & S.S.S.

Time Management
8 of 10
Master the moments and you may be a real pro when it comes to juggling the many demands on your time—classes, homework and activities—with some family help. College gives you an even bigger chance to sharpen your time management skills by doing it all on your own. And that’s a good thing since most jobs require multitasking. You might need to take care of current clients while attracting new ones, respond to e-mails while working on a major presentation, or order tomorrow’s produce while planning next week’s menu.

Someone said, “Wherever you are, be there.” Focus on the present moment and give it all your attention. Don’t let your mind drift and wander here and there when you need to be thinking and concentrating on the moment at hand. You can’t go back and recapture this moment, so make the most of it while it NOW. Master the present and you will master the future. Work smart by mastering the present moment.

Student Success Statement

“Stop worrying about whether you’re going to win or lose and focus your full attention on what’s happening right this moment.”-Phil Jackson

Reflection: This to me means that for one to stop worrying about the future and focus on today because what you do today will affect your future. Whether it be bad or good but you decide how today will be for tomorrow. For example if I have a test tomorrow and I’m frightened about my results if I stop doing this I will have time to study, and study to get enough information on what the test will be. And depending on how good I study will determine my scores.

Part 3
Dot-What?
Look at the site’s address. What follows the dot?
·      Dot-com is not only for businesses; anyone can use it. Dot-coms include well-known and respected companies, but also private individuals.
·      Dot-org usually indicates a not-for-profit organization. Many dot-orgs present unbiased information, but others have political agendas, focus on debatable issues instead of facts, and might not present all sides of the argument.
·      Dot-Gov. indicates a government website at the federal, state, or local level. The federal government is a good source of statistics, and its sites are widely considered among the most reliable.
·      Dot-mil is used by sites that are part of the military.
·      Dot-edu. Usually indicates a university website. While its published research is generally considered very trustworthy, anyone associated with the university, whether a world-renowned scholar or a freshman, can be given space on its server. Professors sometimes put student’s course work up on the web, but that doesn’t mean they’re vouching for the information’s accuracy.

Questions

As you survey the text, ask questions for each selection. Ask who, what, where, when, why, and how questions as they relate to the content. Here’s how you can create questions:
·       Turn the tittle, heading or subtitle into questions.
·       Rewrite the questions at the end of the chapter or after each subheading in your own words.

Write down your questions. Questions help you pay attention, understand the text better and recall the information more easily later on.

Read

Read one section of the chapter at a time, actively looking for an answer to your question for that section. Pay attention to bold and italicized text the authors use to make important points.

Be sure to review everything in the section, including table, graphs, and illustrations – these features can communicate an idea more powerfully than written text.

5 tips for staying motivated tips 1-2

5 tips for staying motivated
Tips1-2
To succeed in high school and college, you have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you rarely care about the work you’re doing.  Here are five ways.
1.  Focus on high-impact activities
The key to success in school is staying focused on your course work. Make a list to get an overall picture of your workload before you start to tackle any of it. Then, make a plan. Although it’s tempting to do the simplest assignments first, those that take more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you’ll learn the most from.
To determine what your priorities are rank your assignments in the order of importance. Then rearrange your time and devote more energy toward those that have the greatest impact on your course work and grades. For example, even though all homework assignments are important, studying for a midterm exam takes priority over writing a paragraph for English class. As you complete each task, think of it as another step on your way to college success.
2.  Create new challenges
Changing your approach can help you stay interested in what you’re doing. If you’ve been given an assignment similar to one you’ve done in the past, think about it in a different way. If you wrote an essay for a creative writing assignment last year, try a poem this time. For book reports, pick a history book instead of another biography.

Note-Taking Strategies
Part 4

For review

Once you’ve done all of the above, you’ll find you’ve created your own personalized study guide. Cover the main section of the page and use the keys words and questions in the left margin as a quiz.

Stick to it

Review your notes the day you take them and all your notes once a week. That way, you won’t need to study as much as when its test time.

You’ve been doing all the work alone

Try out the cornel system, but if it doesn’t work out for you, experiment with other methods. Ask your class mate how they take notes or ask a teacher for advice. Taking god notes requires practice, like any other skill. And the more you work at it now, the more prepared you’ll be to take notes in college.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Part 5
Additional Tips

Although working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. These tips can help you handle the situation and make the most of your time:
  •    Discuss your plans with your family. Balancing the demands of school and work is easier with their support.
  •    Start slowly; don’t commit to working a lot of hours immediately.
  •    Avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead of time as possible.
  •    Use your time efficiently. You can use 10 minutes waiting in a line to go over a few pages of assigned reading. If your job has a lot of downtime and your boss has no objective, you can use slow periods to do schoolwork.
  •    If you commute to your job on public transportation, bring your schoolwork with you so you can work along the way.
  •    Be flexible and willing to make sacrifices. You may have to cut down on some other things you’d like to do because of your school and work commitments.
  •    If you have too much on your plate, admit it. Then cut back as needed.
  •    Schedule relaxation time. Everyone needs some downtime to stay happy and healthy.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 3
Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at New town North High School in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibility. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says.

“In most cases, you can acquire a nice does of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. “In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.

School Comes First
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, If you are rushing through your assignments… or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less-consuming job.”

Selecting Your Courses
Part 4
Social Studies
You can better understand local and world events that are happening now by studying the culture and history that has shaped them. Here is a suggested course plan:
  •  U.S. history (two semesters)
  •  U.S. government (one semester)
  •  World history or geography (one semester)
  •  One additional semester in the above or other areas

Foreign Languages

Learning a foreign language can be a challenge but is exciting. Repetition is the key to learning a language, and having conversations with others speaking the same language is the best way to learn this new language. Repetition is a fun way will build your skills thoroughly as you seek to, master new languages.

Science

Science teaches you to think analytically and apply theories to reality. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken at least three years of laboratory science classes. A good combination includes two semesters of each of the following science:

  • ·       Biology
  •
  • ·       Chemistry or physics
  •
  • ·       Earth/space science

More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:

·       Chemistry or physics (the science you don’t already study)

  • ·       Advanced biology
  •
  • ·       Advanced chemistry
  •
  • ·       Advanced physics

The power of study groups Part 1

The Power of Study Groups
Part 1
Working Together Helps Everyone
You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.
The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with pothers in a small group is helpful because you:
o   Think out loud.
o   Share ideas.
o   Learn from one another.
In an effective study group, you and other students hash out lesson materials together-explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s- and in the process, you most likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself.

10 Time Management Tips for Students
Tips 5-10
Tip-5. Review Your Notes Every Day.

Tip-7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others
If phone calls or texts messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of the day and not to expect a response at other times.
Tip-8. Become a Taskmaster
Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip-9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing
Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip-10. Determine Your Priorities
You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. The set realistic goals that are attainable.

habit 5 & S.S.S.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 5
5. Seek First to Understand, and then to be Understood
Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood? This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication skill there is: active learning.

Why is this habit the key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are-a unique, expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Listen with your eyes, heart and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, of the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent).

Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk than listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. Learn to listen and listen and learn. Listen, really listen, for understanding.

Seek first to understand then to be understood—LISTEN.

Student Success Statement
"So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the "in-group," we lose sight of things that are far more important."--Sean convey
Reflection: This to me means that sometimes for us to fit in or be cool,we loose sight of the things that really matter, like: going to school, on time for class, doing h.w.. All these thing and many more will be affected just because we want to be part of somthing.

5-6

Successful Students
 5-6
5. Don’t sit in the back of the room. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning. Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professor’s teammate (see no.4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptations of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of all the people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity, both of which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, then why are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons, is there something else you should be doing with your time?
6.  ……take good notes. Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.
Why put something into your notes you don’t understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps your learn more. The more you learn then, the less you’ll have to include some deciphering time. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them, and use them often. The more you use them, the more they improve.
